The Wind (61 Near Nature Experiments)

You will need:

  1. Scissors
  2. Pen and paper
  3. Thread
  4. Hanger
  5. Candle or table lamp
  6. Board pin

Understand the workings of wind power with this simple experiment.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Take your paper and draw a spiral on it. Cut out the spiral and using a board pin poke a hole at the centre of the spiral in one side.
  2. Next, take your thread and using the board pin, poke it through the hole. Tie it securely to the centre of the spiral and using at least a foot of thread tie the other end to the hanger.
  3. Hang the hanger somewhere and with the spiral hanging downwards, place a candle or table lamp a few inches under the spiral. Watch what happens. Note it on your paper.

RESULT

Your paper cutout will begin to spiral and move. This is because the heat source at the bottom heats and expands the air molecules at the bottom of the spiral, making them move upwards which in turn makes the spiral spin. Similarly in Nature too, the hot air rises and lifts upwards, making space for the cool air to rush in and take its place, thus creating wind; it is nothing more than the sideway movement of air.
