Now, let’s try to grow the cubes of salt crystals.
Things Required:
Saucer
1 sheet of dark construction paper
Scissors
Table salt
Tablespoon
Small baby food jar with a lid
Directions:
Fill the jar one-half full with water. Add 1½ tablespoonfuls of table salt to the water. Secure the lid. Shake the jar vigorously for 30 times; then allow it to stand. Cut a circle from the construction paper to fit the inside of the saucer. Pour a thin layer of the salt solution over the paper. Try not to pour any undissolved salt onto the paper. Place the sauce in a warm place and wait for several days. Observe the paper daily.
This Is What Happens:
Small, white, cubic crystals form on the paper and increase in size every day.
Science Behind It:
As the water evaporates, dry salt is deposited on the paper. Table salt crystals have a cubic shape. The tiny unseen crystals are deposited first and, as more water evaporates, the crystals stack until they are large enough to be seen.
