Socks Garden (61 Near Nature Experiments)

You will need:

Small flower pot
Pen and paper
Pair of white cotton socks
Magnifying glass
Water and soil
A nice garden

This experiment is to prove to your parents that sometimes getting your clean white socks dirty in the garden is a necessity.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. For this experiment to work best, you must find a nice garden to walk around in.
  2. Wear those clean white socks without your shoes on and take a walk in the garden. Walk on the grass, walk in the flower beds, but not on the flowers; walk around as much as you can even amongst the weeds.
  3. When you are tired of walking, find a place to sit down and very gently pull your socks off without inverting them or shaking of any of the mud/seeds and grass.
  4. Using a magnifying glass, try and note down what all you think your socks may have picked up, including the seeds of various flowers.
  5. Next, with the help of an adult, take your pot and
    put some soil into it.
  6. ‘Plant’ the socks in the pot and cover it with soil.
Keep the ‘socks plant’ in sunlight every day and
water it regularly. Over the span of a few
    weeks, observe what happens.

RESULT

The cotton socks attracted all sorts of items from the garden when you walked through it, including the seeds of various flowers, grass, weeds, pollen, etc. Once you planted the sock in a pot, the cotton being a natural fibre did not hinder in the growth process of the seeds. Very soon your planted ‘sock’ will be growing flowers, weeds and even grass.
