One day, one of Akbar’s courtiers told him about a man named Manohar. He said, “Your Majesty, whoever sees Manohar’s face gets into trouble.” Akbar said, “I don’t believe you. I want to see Manohar tomorrow.” Next day, Manohar entered the court. Akbar had barely seen him when he received news that one of his granaries was on fire. As Akbar left his throne and hurried down the stairs, he fell. That’s when he remembered that Manohar was unlucky. He said, “Manohar, it is your fault. Guards! Arrest him!” On the way to the jail, Manohar told Birbal about the incident. Birbal whispered a secret in Manohar’s ear. Next day, Akbar visited Manohar in jail. Manohar said, “Your Majesty, you say I am unlucky. But I saw your face and now I am in jail! Who is more unlucky?” Akbar realised that misfortune had nothing to do with Manohar and set him free.
