The Door to Hell is, in fact, a natural gas field located in Derweze, Turkmenistan. The field after collapsing into an underground cavern in 1971 became an actual natural gas crater measuring 69 metres in diameter and 30 metres in depth. So as to stop the spread of methane gas around the area, geologists set the crater on fire in the 1970s expecting it to burn out within a few weeks.
