Barbie, the cow, was not well. Farmer Umber had gone off for two days to attend the Farmers’ Meet and there was panic on Umber’s Farm. Leroy, the farm hand, was called in and Mrs Umber said, “Go immediately and call the farmer!” Leroy set off riding the old farm bicycle. But it had not been used for many weeks and a little way down the road its handle came off! Leroy ran back and saddled up the mare, Molly, and rode off again. He reached the farmer by late afternoon. They returned to the farm in the cart with Molly trotting beside it. The lights were bright in the barn and they saw old Doctor Mobley’s car parked outside. Running into the barn, they found that Barbie had a tiny, white calf standing beside her! She was lovingly licking it as it stumbled around. There was great celebration at the farm!
