Amy, Farmer Fowler’s daughter, ran after her brother, Tim. He was going to paint the fence around the farmhouse. “I can paint too!” she said. But Tim was firm. “No, Amy, you’re too small!” “I’m not!” said Amy, “I’m six!” They argued while Tim began to paint the fence, firmly telling Amy to get lost! “You go and help Mom bake the cookies,” he advised her. But she stubbornly refused. After a while, an idea occurred to Amy. She scurried off home, and Tim looked very relieved. But soon she was back. She had brought her book and some crayons and pencils. Tim was happy. “That’s right,” he said, “You read a book while I finish this!” When he finished, Amy was not to be seen. Then he saw her. She had painted birds, houses, trees, butterflies and flowers on the newly-painted fence! Tim burst out laughing! “No one’s ever had a fence like this!”
