Bigger, the farmer’s donkey, was a very sad fellow. He had something to feel sad about every day: it was cloudy, it was raining, the sun was too hot, the load was too heavy, the hens cackled loudly! None of the farm animals stayed for long anywhere near Bigger, for they would soon become miserable listening to him moaning. But Abby was new on the farm. She was a puppy who had arrived in a basket and had found the barn very warm and cosy. She would hear Bigger grumbling and didn’t understand a word. But she happily fell asleep near him. Bigger was quite puzzled with this new creature. The new creature didn’t seem to be disturbed by him. Nor did she run away like the others. He spent all his time watching Abby, and became so fond of the puppy and her games, that he forgot to grumble! Abby had taught Bigger to love!
