Taking Charge

It was getting dark. Farmer Oldwood and his wife had gone to the town but hadn’t returned yet. Basil, the horse, was the oldest animal on the farm and he was worried. He consulted Letty, the cow. “We need to eat,” he said, “Besides, there’s no one in the farmhouse.” “Let us call everyone and tell them to eat first,” suggested Letty, “Then we can decide what to do.” The animals and the birds ate their food and went to the pond to drink water. Everyone was quiet. “We will take turns to guard the farmhouse till the master returns,” said Basil, taking charge. If they don’t return tomorrow, then we have to go to Farmer Finley next door and inform him.” The next morning, Basil went to Farmer Finley who realised something was wrong and sent a man to the town. Oldwood had stayed with his daughter for a day longer! He came home immediately with his wife!
