Lance was Farmer Solly’s son. He was at school most of the time, but came home for holidays. He didn’t like the farm animals. “They are so smelly!” he would say. However, he liked to climb up trees and eat fruits and ride the pony. One day, he tried to climb up a ladder to the roof, but slipped and fell! He broke his leg and was bed-ridden! He didn’t know what to do all day. The animals and the birds of the farm began to visit him. The ducks and the geese would peer in; the rooster sat on his bed, the sheep, the cow and the horses–all came to the window or into the room! Dave, the large sheepdog, slept near his bed and Roller, the cat, settled down on his quilt! Lance got better and he realised how loving the animals and the birds on the farm were. They were not smelly; they were so caring!
