Usually found in arid ecosystems. Like all other hyenas, it is a carnivore, and usually scavenges on carcasses left by other predators. It has a short torso, long limbs with forelimbs longer than hind limbs and thin neck and a small face on a heavy head. They are carriers of rabies; it is not unknown for them to attack humans.
