Shooting the Target

Once, a young archer whose brain was clouded with mana (pride) challenged an archery teacher. The young archer hit a distant bull’s eye. He then split that arrow with his second shot. The young archer then turned to the teacher and asked, “Can you match this?” The teacher did not speak but took the young man to a cliff. The teacher calmly went to the edge of the cliff. He drew his bow and fired a clean direct hit on a faraway tree. “Now, it is your turn,” he said to the young archer. The young archer was taken aback. He could not even stand on the edge of the cliff, let alone take a shot from there. Just then, a monk standing behind them said to the young archer, “You have the skill of your bow, but you lack the skill of your mind that lets you take the shot,” The young archer apologised and became the teacher’s student.

Moral: Let not pride hamper your achievements.
