Once, the Bodhisattva was born as a vegetable grower. One day, he decided to become a monk and go to the forest. So, he hid his shovel and became a monk. However, soon he started thinking of his shovel and returned to become a vegetable grower. Then again, he gave up gardening and became a monk. He repeated this six times. The seventh time, he threw his shovel into the river and shouted, “I have conquered!” The king of Benaras, who was passing by, heard him. “I have conquered the trishna (desire) in my mind and so have won the battle against bad deeds,” said the Shovel Wise Man to the king. Inspired by these words, the king followed the Shovel Wise Man to the Himalayas. The king’s entire army, ministers and the people of Benaras also followed him. The wise man showed them the way to be peaceful.
