Origin
This idea was expressed in classical Greek books as early as the third century BC.
Explanation
It is sometimes said when someone has died young. Virtuous or gifted people die at an early age, because the gods want those people to be with them in the afterlife. This springs from a belief in an after-life that is better than this life. On this assumption, a person who dies young is luckier than the one who dies old. The gods love the young person so much that they cause him to die so as to have him with them earlier. This is generally taken to mean that those who die young escape the troubles of old age, and so their death was a favour from the gods.
Example
So many brilliant authors and artists died before the age of fifty that it’s easy to believe that whom the gods love die young.
