December 15, 20…

Dear Sohan,
I was a bit disappointed to learn that you could not pass the Pre-Board school examination. But it should not discourage you. I was happy to know that your school has cleared your name for the final Board Examination on the strength of your good past record. That is what matters.
I know you are a brilliant student and the final Board exam result would make me and your family proud of you. The need of the hour is to get busy with your studies. The tragic death of your loving pet dog ‘Tommy’ last month affected your concentration. I feel what it meant to you and I saw how it put you in grief. That is the reason why you could not do some of the exam subjects well enough. Do not lose heart and get over your grief. The life must go on. The first duty of a student is towards his studies.
Final exams are still two and a half months away. You can easily make up and excel. Remember friend, you have no time to lose. Get over and get going. We shall be celebrating together when the results come out. I am doing fine with my own studies. Nothing to worry.
Pay my regards to the uncle and auntie. Give my love to sister Kavita and Little Kunnu.

March 13, 20……

Dear Shabnam,
We received your letter last week. The mother has fully recovered from typhoid she had been suffering from for the past two weeks. There is no need to worry on that matter. She is fine now. During her illness she remembered you very much.
Your cat is in good health. We all take care of her. Nimmo auntie has very low opinion of our cat. She thinks the cat has evil designs on her pet parrot. All your plants are also doing fine. I water them regularly. Don’t worry.
The father was saying that your last report card showed that you were not upto mark in mathematics. I hope you have devoted more time to study the same and covered the ground. There were some grammatical mistakes in your letter. Improve you English grammar. The father also mentioned that. Put your mind to the studies seriously. The mother always wishes to see you become an I.A.S. or I.P.S. officer. Remember that.
Love from the mother and Abboo. Mom from your cat. Your friends Ayesha, Asha and Nigar miss you. We all look forward to seeing in holidays.

Room 83, Poorvanchal Hostel,
Pusa Agricultural Institute,
Ludhiana
Septermber 17, 20…….

Dear mother and father,
I hope this letter finds you in good health.
Recently some students of our institution were found to be indulging in drug abuse in a hotel that was raided by the police. The news was covered on TV and by the newspapers. A student named Kuldeep was also among those who were involved. Yesterday Mamaji telephoned to me to reveal that you were worried because you thought that it was I who was named.
This is a terrible misunderstanding. I am clean and I never had anything to do with the drugs. I ever stay away from such groups. The boy who was named was just my namesake, a senior. I don’t even knew about him. I learnt about him only when my friends told me about it and alerted me about the name confusion.
Please stop worrying. I am not involved in drug rackets. Rest assured that I won’t do anything in future too to betray your trust. I am concentrating on my studies to earn research scholarship.
Pay my respects to grandpa and explain the true situation to him. Love to Sangeeta.

Dear cousin Gautam,
Please accept my warmest congratulations on passing the Senior Secondary exams, securing position in top ten. Your success and achievement has done us proud. My father and mother have also asked me to convey their felicitations to you.
I had always believed that you would come out with flying colours. But making it to top ten in the merit list is spectacular and beyond our expectations. It was really a pleasant surprise. I hope we shall be hearing about your further successes.
This success should prove a great help in your future plans. Now it would be easy for you to gain admission in some Medical or Business Management course. I wish I were with you to congratulate you personally and to shake you by hand besides asking for my share of sweets.
I wish you best of luck for future. Write to me about your future plans if you please. Pay my respects to your parents and love to Yogesh.

28, B. C. Hostel,
Bishop Cotton School, Shimla
September 28, 20……..

Dear mother,
I know that you are not happy with my report cards and failures in school tests. I sincerely apologise to you for proving a disappointment to you.
I promise that I will work hard and show marked improvement in future tests and exams. Infact, my failures were not due to negligence. It took time for me to get acclaimatised to this place and hostel life which was totally a new experience to me. I used to feel sick and out of depth most of the time. I ran light fever for several weeks. The school doctor told me that some plains people go through that experience. I did not write to you about it to save you from worries.
I am again in command of myself and feel at home in the hostel. Now back to the studies I am, all set to recover the lost ground. By the time the father returns from England you will be getting good report cards. I will not put you in embarrassment. Give my love to Pinky.

Your loving son
Rahul

2nd October, 20………

My dear Rahul,
I read your letter and learnt about the problems you have been facing. It is good that you have got over the crisis. Don’t feel guilty for your temporary setbacks in examinations.
My dear child, I was never unhappy with you. A little worried over the examination results, I was. I know that you are a good boy and brilliant in studies. Of course, something had been upsetting you which I suspected. It does take time to get set in new surroundings. And you had gone away from home for the first time. Even for me it was unsettling experience, not having you near me. In that state I too messed up my cooking many a time. Now we two have resolved our crisis.
Study well and concentrate on your books. You will recover lost ground and do us proud in forthcoming examinations. Forget the past and look to the future. Child, living in hostel is an important part of education. It makes a man out of a boy. It develops character, teaches a student to take his own decisions, tackle problems and build up self-confidence. Take it as a golden opportunity. Take care of your health and diet.
We look forward to having you with us during year end festival season.

My dear Alam,
The news of the death of your dear mother in a fire accident came as a great shock to me. She was like mother to me too and I know how deeply you were attached to her. My heart goes to you in this hour of your grief, nay our grief.
Strange are the ways of destiny. It removes the good souls from our amidst without any reason or rhyme. We humans are helpless pawns in its hands. All we can do is to submit to the will of God and accept it. You must bear with this great loss and we shall have to reconcile ourselves to this tragedy. What can not be cured must be endured. Dear friend, face this situation with courage and boldness. There is nothing anyone can do about it. It is the way of life that forces inevitable truths on us. I wish I were with you to share your grief.
May Almighty grant eternal peace to the departed soul and give us courage to accept His will. Please convey my sympathies to Nazma and your father.

Yours sincerely

My dear friend Saurabh,
I hope my letter finds you in best of your health and spirits. I am sure you have done well in your annual examinations. My own examinations went fine. This time I am certain to get excellent marks. I feel very happy about it.
What are your plans for the summer holidays? I still carry the sweet memories of Durga Puja holidays I spent with you at Kolkata. Now I want you to spend some time with us during summer vacations. My mother has asked me several times to invite you to Shimla. I have a great pleasure to inform you that my dad has bought an apartment in Chhota Shimla and I have now my own room. Our flat presents a fantastic view of the hills, snow capped peaks, forests and valleys. You will love it. Cool breeze feels so refreshing. There are a lot of spots around Shimla worth a visit each. Then, there are facilities for trekking, mountain climbing, bird watching and camping. We shall have a nice time.
Shimla itself is an interesting place. During summer the place fills up with tourists and it becomes very colourful. The tourists have already started arriving. You need not worry about the expenses. You will be our guest, of course. My parents will be too happy to have you here. I have talked to dad also and he too has agreed to your visit.
Hoping for a positive reply from you. We will work out the details of your stay. You must come at least for a week. You can email, SMS or give a call or simply post a letter.
I will be waiting to hear from you.

2nd February, 20….

My dear uncle,
Thank you very much for the precious gift you sent me for my 14th birthday which we celebrated on 30th January. Your gift was the first to arrive on that day through courier service in the very morning when I had not even realised that it was my birthday. Your happy wish card reminded me of it as well. My eyes popped out at seeing what the gift package contained. A cutest quartz watch…just what I needed!
I put it on my wrist atonce as everyone in the family admired its beauty. It dazzled all my friends as well. Your gift was the best I received on this birthday. Thank you very much for it, Mamaji. I wish you were there in my party which everyone enjoyed.

10. Write a letter to your sister who lives in Chennai with her husband informing her of your health and recovery from long illness of dengue fever.

B-12, Amar Colony,
Lajpat Nagar-4
New Delhi-110024
21st August, 20……

Dear sister,
I have been receiving regular letters from you since I fell victim to dengue epidemic in Delhi. Jiju himself paid a visit to me when I was in hospital and he had come to Delhi on business. Your concern for my health is very touching and I thank you both for that.
You will be glad to know that now I am fully recovered by the grace of God and good wishes of near and dear ones. But a long bout of dengue fever leaves one extremely exhausted and weakened. I will be back in full health only after some time. I have again begun to study my books and going to school. It is so energy sapping. But don’t worry. Mom and dad are all over me feeding juices, tonics and nutrients as if they were raising me into another Dara Singh. I have also been ordered to take morning walks in the nearby park. I wish I were in Chennai to plod along Marina beach. It would have been greater fun. May be, soon I shall be there, as Jiju has invited me so many times, if I get fed up with overfeeding of mom. I might take refuge in your dosai, vada and sambar. We are eagerly awaiting to have you two here in Delhi during Dussehra.

Your loving brother
Kamlesh Gupta
