Developed and fast means of travel and communication have made the world very small. The distant places in the country and the disant countries in the world have become closer. This tempts us to travel more and visit more places of interest and knowledge. Some people travel in and out of the country for business purposes. Others who can afford more visit different places for recreation, knowledge and experience. Such visitors are called tourists. Tourism has become a major industry of the world. It is indirect export and earns rich foreign exchange.
India is the most ancient country in the world where the civilisation dawned first of all. So it has great potential for tourism. There is a great number of historical places and monuments, temples, caves, shrines, wild life parks and sanctuaries, hill stations, sea resorts and many worth seeing places. Almost all religions and cultures of the world are assimilated here. Its variety of culures, rich regional and national religious and cultural festivals are great attractions. So Indians potential for tourism is as vast, grand and varies as is the country itself. Lacs of foreign tourists attracted by the above factors visit India every year and India earns crores of rupees as foreign exchanges from them.
Govt of India has lunched a world vide campaign through its innumerable tourist offices set up in almost all tourist-potential countries. The Department of Tourism and Indian Tourism Development Corporation are functioning hand in hand to promote tourism in India, Overseas India has tourist-offices in New York, Los Angles, Chicago, Torento, Paris, Frankfurt, London, Vienna, Kuwait, Bangkok and many other unnumerable important rich and famous places of the world. All offices are provided with publicity literature as promotional material in different popular languages of the world. For the promotion of domestic tourism literature is produced in Hindi and other regional languages. Indian Tourism Development Corporation maintained a nationwide transport system. Its fleet consists of air conditioned and deluxe coaches and cars. In addition to this special trains like palace on wheels and Great Indian Rover have been introduced to promote tourism in India.
Tourism not only earns rich foreign exchange but also promotes business and commercial activities in the country. It promotes employment opportunities. It promotes national intergration and international understanding. It also promotes the statues of the country in the international field. Tourism in India provides a beautiful international window to the most varied life culture, monuments, flora and fauna of our country.
