The Triple Filter Test

Greek philosopher Socrates was famous for his wisdom. Once, a man visited him and said, “I want to tell you something about your friend.” “Wait a moment! Before you tell me the news let us filter it. It is called the Triple Filter Test,” replied Socrates. The puzzled man had never heard about such a test in his life, but he reluctantly agreed to undergo the test. “First of all, are you sure that what you are about to tell me is true?” Socrates asked. The man said, “No, it is just hearsay… .” “Well! Are you going to tell me something good about my friend?” Socrates continued. “No, it is the opposite…,” the man replied. “Finally, tell me whether the news is going to be of any use to me,” Socrates asked. The man just shrugged his shoulders. Socrates told the man, “Friend, if you are going to tell me something that is not true, good or useful, then why are you telling it to me?”
