An old Red Indian Chieftain collected all the little boys one evening and they sat around the bonfire. He told them the stories about the Sun and the Moon, the trees and the animals. That day, he was telling them the story of the Star who found the Lily:
Long ago, it was a happy time for people as there were no wars; everyone had enough food to eat; there were flowers and fruits in the land. When the stars shone at night, people knew that they were the homes of the good people who had died and gone to live in the home of the Great Spirit.
One night, some brave warriors saw a bright star in the south and it looked like a bird. That night, one of the warriors dreamt of a beautiful young girl who had sent her sisters to live in the mortal world. She missed them and wished she too could come and live there. That maiden was the bright star he had seen. Five of the brave warriors decided to go and search for the beautiful maiden. They saw that she was coming down to the earth and went forward to welcome her. The Star followed them home.

Now there was a problem as to where the Star would live. One warrior took her to the mountains and put her on a white rose. But she could not be seen there. The rose was hidden too far away.
He carried her to the prairie where tall grasses grew. People rode through them. But there were large herds of buffaloes wandering through the grasslands. They would trample upon her.
The warriors searched far and wide and could really find no place really suitable for the Star maiden.
Finally, they saw a lake deep in the valley. It was a beautiful pool of water with white lilies growing in it. The Star looked at it and found that they were her sisters who had come to live on the earth.

“I have found my sisters,” said the Star. The other stars too glittered in the still pool. And they had found their home with thousands of star-like lilies that grew there.
Now, it is said that the Star lives with her sisters in the pool. If you look there, you will always see the Morning Star and the Evening Star.
