Long ago, a king had a kind and generous son named Jerome. On the prince’s seventh birthday, the king presented him with a beautiful songbird in a cage. Even though Jerome took good care of the songbird, she never sang. “Why don’t you ever sing?” asked Jerome. “I am not happy here,” said the songbird. “How can I make you feel happy?” asked Jerome. “Please set me free,” pleaded the songbird. Kind Jerome immediately set it free. The songbird happily flew away to its family that lived in the forest. But it returned the next day and thanked Jerome. “How can I return your kind gesture, my prince?” it asked. Jerome thought for a while and requested, “Will you please fly to the neighbouring kingdom and sing for my friend, Prince Charles? He has been bedridden for a long time. Your sweet songs will cheer him up.” The songbird did as Jerome requested and repaid his kind gesture.
