The king and the queen wanted a real princess to marry their son. One stormy night, someone knocked at the palace door and they found a wet girl standing outside. She said that she was a princess who had lost her way. The queen decided to test her to see if she was a real princess. She gave her dry clothes, and after giving her a hot dinner, she took her to sleep in a room where a hundred mattresses were piled up over a small pea. The next day, she asked the princess if she had slept well. “No!” replied the princess, “Something small and hard under the mattress was poking me all night!” The queen realised that only a real princess could have been made uncomfortable by a little pea under a hundred mattresses! And she was delighted to have found a bride for her son finally!
