The Precious Gift

The king of genies, Mahyur, was extremely pleased with Hatim Tai for bringing peace to his land. He wanted to load Hatim with wealth. Hatim, however, refused, saying, “I never take any reward for serving humanity.” “Generous Hatim,” said the king, “accept this magical staff as a token of respect. It will help you serve humanity better. It possesses rare magical qualities. If you throw the staff on water, it will assume the shape of a boat. If a poisonous insect stings you, its venom will have no effect on you; fire will not burn you. If anyone tries to bewitch you, his magic shall have no power over you and especially the poison of the red dragon will have no effect on you.” Hatim realised that it was indeed a precious gift that would come handy in his adventurous life, so he accepted the magical staff gracefully and moved on.
