The Magic Mirror

Jenny was visiting her grandmother. Granny was going to help with a church sale, so a lot of old things were being taken out. The attic in Granny’s house was a wonderful place to hunt for things.
Jenny rummaged through old clothes, trunks, furniture, toys and all kinds of treasures in the attic. Granny had told her to set aside things that were in a fairly good condition and she had a box full of things that could go for the sale: coats, hats, a walking stick, shoes, a table fan, some dress material, curtains, a small table, dried flowers, and a large bowl.
Then she found a hand mirror. It was slightly tarnished around the metal edges, but the mirror was in very good condition. She looked into it and then saw something strange. It showed her reflection and then the image dissolved and she saw many bright colours across the mirror.

She looked at the window. “Is the sky being reflected in the mirror,” she wondered. But no! The sky was bright blue and there were several colours in the mirror! She looked again and saw Granny making a cup of tea in the kitchen. She thought about her mother, and saw her talking on the phone.
“It’s a magic mirror!” she said to herself, “It shows me whatever I think of! How wonderful!”
She decided she would keep this mirror for herself. She went downstairs and asked Granny if she could keep it. “Yes, you may, dear,” said Granny.
Jenny had a lot of fun thinking of her friends and neighbours and seeing what each one was doing. It was really a very interesting mirror!
One day, Jenny looked at it and wondered who Granny’s neighbour was. She saw the house. A lady came out of the front door and locked it, walking away carrying a shopping bag.
Suddenly, Jenny saw a man at the back door of the house, trying to open it. He began to pick up things from the house and put them into a sack he was carrying.
Jenny was sure he was a thief. He had put a laptop and a camera into the sack when Jenny went running to Granny to show her the scene. Granny at once rang for the police. Within minutes they arrived and caught the thief red-handed!

They thanked Granny and said Jenny was a very alert child. They didn’t know she had a magic mirror!
