Hatim Tai lay under a tree, exhausted by the pain caused by the cutting of his thigh. Behind that tree lived a kind jackal couple who had witnessed what Hatim had done for the doe. They nursed him. Hatim, on recovering, thanked them and asked them how he could repay their kindness. They told him that in their neighbourhood lived a hyena who killed their babies as soon as they were born. If he could get rid of that hyena then they would be very grateful. Hatim said to himself, ‘Killing is not in my nature; it’s cruelty, but for the larger good maybe killing this hyena would not be cruel.’ So, he went to the hyena and asked him to stop killing the jackal’s babies. When he refused, Hatim Tai slew him with his sword. He then started his journey towards the deserts of Hawaida leaving the grateful, thankful jackals behind.
