The Giant’s Causeway is a dramatic sight at the foot of the basalt cliffs along the sea coast on the Antrim plateau in Northern Ireland. It is made up of some 40,000 massive black basalt columns sticking out of the sea. This sight has inspired legends of giants striding over the sea to Scotland. Geological studies over the last 300 years show that this was caused by volcanic activity some 50-60 million years ago. The unique feature of the site is the 40,000 large, regularly shaped polygonal basalt columns in perfect horizontal sections, forming a pavement; it has been a visitor attraction for 300 years.
