The Father’s Lesson

Long ago, a man lived in Obobo sub-district in Pokedi village. He was very upset with his son’s weakness. One day, while talking to his friend, the man told him about his will. He said that his son was too lazy and so he could not leave all his property, his sorghum, maize and ground-nuts under his care. He told his friend to burn all his huts, farms and other belongings when he would die. “Give my lazy son my wives and children and let him see how much hard work is required to feed them all.” So, when he died, his friend burned all his farms and belongings. The father did not want his son to be lazy and in poverty after his death. He wanted to teach his son a lesson. So after the father’s death, the son worked hard and built his own huts and worked in the farms. He not only understood the value of hard work but also won everyone’s respect.
