Once, a woman had eight sons and a stepson named Kore. Kore was very brave. His step-brothers were jealous of him and wanted to kill him. One day, they said to their mother, “Let’s get rid of him.” She agreed. All of them planned to send Kore to the forest to be eaten up by an elephant. The mother said to Kore, “My son, I am not well. Can you bring me medicine?” Kore asked her what kind of medicine she needed. She replied, “The tail of an elephant.” Kore was brave enough to kill an elephant and bring her the tail. The mother and her eight sons were disappointed. She told her sons that she would send Kore to the river to fetch water and then they could push him in the water and drown him. So, she said to Kore, “I’m sick. I need some water.” It was dark when he went to fetch water. His brothers brought with them spears to kill him. But Kore killed all of them and escaped.
