On 3 January, 1903 Adolf’s father Ellis Hitler passed away due to internal haemmorhage. Adolf was then 13 years old. It did not come to the family as a surprise because he had been a sick old man for years who never got any better but worse.
After his death the responsibility of taking care of the family fell entirely on Clara. It was a very difficult period for her. Somehow she did not let her children feel pinch of the absence of their father.
But Clara paid a heavy price for her sacrifice. She had herself been sick inside but she had not revealed it. But soon it became evident. The truth could no more be hidden. It broke the heart of the young Adolf. He lost interest in everything and began to drift. Clara shifted to another town named Linz. She pleaded with Adolf and made him join a school.
In 1905, it was discovered that Adolf had inherited his father’s lung disease. The doctors advised him to live in the clean air of rural area. So, Adolf went to Speetel to live with his aunt.
On the other side, after her son’s departure Clara’s condition became worse. For the medical treatment she went to Ourphar. She remained under treatment for two year but could not recover health. Clara Hitler breathed her last on 21 December, 1907.
17 years old Adolf had become totally orphan.
A period of trauma began for Adolf Hitler. Frustration and despair haunted him. It became necessary for Adolf to find a job as soon as possible for survival. He was getting orphanage stipend but it was too little to take care of his needs.
Adolf went to Vienna that promised better opportunities. He was still determined that in no case he would become a government servant. It would mean the decay of his own philosophy and ideals which was not acceptable to him.
