The wind howled and battered the trees. Lexie was scared. The storm was going to make it difficult to reach home on time. It was raining very hard and she could not even see ahead. On reaching the river she crossed every day, she saw that the water had almost reached the bridge. It was flowing very fast. ‘Oh, no! How will I cross this bridge? I am scared,’ thought Lexie. Suddenly, she saw a small child crying softly near the bridge. She went to him and picked him up in her arms. When she spoke to him, he said, “I have to cross the bridge, but I’m afraid!” he cried. Lexie thought for a moment and said, “Lovely child, I will carry you across and then you can run home from there.” Picking him up, Lexie carefully crossed the bridge. “Thank you. You are a kind lady!” said the boy. Suddenly, Lexie realised that in helping the boy, she had forgotten her own fear!
