Subhash Chandra Goyal was a rice trader from Hisar district, Haryana. He later transformed into a media baron. His other business ventures include packaging, theme parks, lotteries and cinema multiplexes. He is also the founder of Zee TV. On November 2009, he took over the management responsibility of Daily News and Analysis (DNA). This features among the top 8 English dailies in India and is one of fastest growing English newspapers in the country. He was bestowed with the Emmy award in 2011.
Subhash Chandra Goyal after completing high school began his entrepreneurial career as a rice trader in Hisar. In the 1970s, he entered the packaging business known as Essel Packaging Company. It began by making laminated covers for the Food Corporation of India, to store surplus agricultural harvests.
Subhash Chandra launched Zee Telefilms Limited in October 1992. He was the first person in India who sought to exploit the huge business potential of satellite television channels. Before the launch of Zee TV viewers in India were under the compact grip of Doordarshan, the state-controlled terrestrial network. It was Subhash Chandra Goyal`s vision that helped to give birth to the satellite TV industry in India and inspired others to follow the suit.
In 1995 Subhash Chandra Goyal began the Siticable operations after the launch of Zee TV. He also commenced a joint venture with News Corp. In 1995, he launched two new channels, Zee News and Zee Cinema. In 2000, Zee TV became the first cable company in India to launch the Internet over Cable services. In 2003, Zee TV became the first service provider in the nation to launch Direct-to- Home (DTH) services.
Subhash Chandra Goyal is the President of the Global Vipassana Foundation in his capacity as a Vipassana meditator. Chandra is the Chairman of Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation of India, a charitable trust that prompts, supports, runs non-formal activities and eliminates illiteracy from rural and tribal India. He is also the Founder-Chairman of the Global Foundation for Civilizational Harmony which is an inter-faith group. Trans-national Alternate Learning for Emancipation and Empowerment is a research Foundation that was set up by Chandra as a literary, scientific and charitable trust in May 1996.
