Maria was the youngest of five children born in Russian occupied Poland. Her mother taught her children, and her father played games that taught Math and Geography. In those days, education was forbidden for girls in Poland. However, young Maria obtained a higher education from an academy for women taught in private homes. Both Maria and her sister Bronia had thirst for knowledge. So, they planned to save enough money together to support Bronia while she went to the medical school in France. Once established, Bronia would then provide a place for Maria. Till then, Maria took a position as a governess in the countryside. There, she educated herself in Physics and Chemistry late at night. Bronia sent for Maria later that year. Maria became Marie, one of the five women to earn the university’s ‘licence es mathematiques’. Marie Curie discovered radium and she invented the first mobile X-ray machine. She was the first woman to be honoured with a Nobel Prize, and the first person to receive two Nobel Prizes in two different scientific categories.
