Slaying Jatayu

Ravana dragged Seeta into the Pushpaka Vimana and took off. But Seeta’s cries had been heard by Jatayu, who roosted in the trees close by. He flew down to attack Ravana, his sharp beak and claws tearing into him. A fierce combat followed. But Jatayu’s claws were no match for the sword of the evil Ravana. One by one, he cut off Jatayu’s wings and the bird crashed to the ground. Seeta wept for Jatayu and for her own plight as Ravana flew on. Meanwhile, Rama had seen the stag transform into Mareecha. He realised he had been tricked. ‘If Lakshmana has heard this demon’s cry, and leaves Seeta to come to my help, Seeta must be in danger!’ he thought and ran back to Panchavati. Seeing Lakshmana on the way, he feared the worst. “Oh, Lakshmana, you should not have left her alone,” said Rama, as they both raced back.
