An unbreakable vow was sworn by Sugreeva and Rama to seal their friendship and alliance. Hanuman lit a fire as witness to the vow, as was customary. Sugreeva called for a bundle that had been found in the forest. Seeta had dropped her jewels as Ravan had fled with her, and the monkeys, finding some of them, had collected them and brought them to Sugreeva. He opened the bundle and Rama saw jewellery that seemed to belong to Seeta in it. Blinded by his tears, he asked Lakshmana to confirm if these were indeed Seeta’s jewels. Lakshmana looked at the anklets and said they were indeed Seeta’s. “I look at her feet only, so these are the only jewels I recognise,” Lakshmana said. Lakshmana had always been known for his courage and right conduct. He never once failed in his devotion to Rama.
