School—Temple of Learning

We have a new principal called Mrs. Lee. She is very interested in the environment and she says that we should try to conserve it for the future generations. She has suggested various things that we could do in the school to help.
We now have some recycling bins. One of these is for paper. All the students and teachers put such things as newspaper, comics, magazines and old exercise books into it.
There is another bin for glass bottles and jars, but not many students have glass containers in school. The bin for aluminum cans get more use. Quite a few of us drink cans of soft drinks.
Mrs. Lee says that having recycling bins help to keep the school clean as well as helping the environment. If everything is put in a recycling bin when it is no longer needed, then it must not left lie around in the school to make it look untidy. Mrs. Lee has also had more litter bins installed to make sure we all keep the school as neat and tidy as possible. Students who drop litter are given a detention immediately.
In our school, we have a school garden. All the students take turn to help look after it, although we also have a part time gardener. The gardener used to use chemical pesticides and fertilizers, but Mrs. Lee suggested him that he must use environmental friendly chemicals instead.
We have started a compost heap. We put leaves, dead plants and grass cuttings on it. The staff from the school canteen put vegetable waste, such as potato peelings, on it. When the compost heap rots down we feed the garden soil by spreading the decayed material on it.
Most of the students are enthusiastic about the recycling projects. It is good to feel that we are helping to save the planet.
