Remembering people : Forms and faces

No doubt, a man’s facial features are important clues to remember him. But it happens so very often that you remember a name, but not the face that goes with it. Your friend introduces you to someone—who chances to meet you a couple of days later on. But, on this meeting, you stand dumbfounded, unable to recall who he is. The man in question may feel bad thinking that you haven’t given him due respect.

So, remembering names and faces adds to your stature as a gentleman. Those who know how memory works, always remember names and faces and recall them with ease and elan under all circumstances.
You too can be one of them. Whenever you meet a person, look at his face carefully. His eyes and their obvious impressions, marks on face, the way he stands, walks, conducts himself. His nose and its formation, chin, facial silhouette, teeth, shape and size of ears, hair style; all these should be scrupulously watched. A sum total of these informations, along with his name, are your inputs to memory machine. Flash this picture 2-3 times on mind’s screen. It would help all the more if the person’s name is split up into its constituent units. If you remember his name, and also what the name stands for, you will remember it for ever—and easily too.
To record names and faces for a tenable memory, following points merit consideration :
❑ While meeting a person take cognizance of his eye-colour, manners and body posture.
❑ See his/her facial outline and make note of any mark or blemish therein. Notice his/her temperament and demeanour.
❑ Mark how the person talks, walks and stands.
❑ Hair style, nose lines, ears and teeth formation need to be noted.
❑ Try to picture him/her in your mind’s eye and cross check how far that image tallies with the real person.
Apart from above you can make it a point to reach a party or get-together some 15-20 minutes before the time scheduled. This would give you enough time and space to mingle up with invitees and know them informally. Like those coming late, you won’t suffer runthrough of a formal introduction to a pack of strangers. Because by that time you would be already cozy with them. Take care to make a mental picture of faces and names you encounter, and have a cerebral re-run of it so that pictures are cross checked and locked in memory for long time to come.
