The refrigerator, one of the most common home appliances used today, is dated way back in 1876. Though, it was in 1876, that the refrigerator in its practical form was evolved, but it was William Cullen, who demonstrated the artificial refri-geration process at the University of Glasgow in 1748. Oliver Evans, an American inventor, designed the first ever refrigeration machine in the year 1805. For almost three decades, there wasn’t any development in the area of refrigeration. In the year 1834, a scientist named Jacob Perkins built a refrigeration machine based on vapour compre-ssion cycle. Perkins used ether as compression gas. John Gorrie, an American physician, modified Oliver Evans’ refrigerator in the year 1844 and made a refrigerating machine to make ice. Till this time, the refrigerating machine used vapour compression cycle. It was in the year 1876 that the modern refrigeration process came into being. A German engineer, named Carl Von Linden, patented liquefying gas process that eventually became basis for refrigeration.
