Sheikh Chilli’s village was once visited by a Patwari (village accountant). Sheikh was fascinated by the Patwari, as well as his spectacles! He was impressed by the way he would read his papers through his spectacles and talk to people looking over the rim. Next day, his mother sent some sweets with Sheikh for the Patwari. Sheikh asked the Patwari where he could get similar spectacles. The Patwari said that he could get them in town. Sheikh believed that these spectacles gave one the ability to read. So, he went to a spectacles shop in town and asked for reading glasses. He tried a number of spectacles, but could read with none. The shopkeeper saw Sheikh trying to read a book upside down and realised that this customer was illiterate and foolish, too. He explained to Sheikh that to be able to read he had to go to a teacher; wearing reading glasses only cleared one’s vision; it could not give the power to read! Simpleton Sheikh went back home, feeling sad.
