The description of Seeta’s beauty made Ravana abduct her and make her his own possession, like all the other valuable things he had collected in his golden kingdom of Lanka. It would be an added pleasure to make Rama suffer for killing his brothers and demon army. Ravana decided to consult Mareecha who, he knew, had faced Rama in the combat. Mareecha had become an ascetic after that battle. He sought Mareecha’s help to abduct Seeta in revenge for the death of Khara, Dooshana and the demon army. Mareecha advised Ravana, “Go home to your wives and family, my lord. Even the thought of abducting Seeta is misconduct and insulting. I assure you that if you do this, the entire race of demons and our family shall be destroyed.” Ravana realised the wisdom of Mareecha’s advice and returned to his palace.
