There is a district named Vardhaman in the state of West Bengal in India. Pandit Ramakant Roy lived with his family in a village named Radha Nagar of this district. Ramakant was the Mukhtar of the queen of Vardhaman. He was well versed in maintaining and managing the estates of the queen.
Birth
Ramakant had married thrice in his life. His first wife’s name was Subhadara Devi, second wife’s was Tarini Devi and third one was Ramni Devi. On 22nd May, 1772, Tarini Devi gave birth to a child. At that time, Indian was under the full control of the East India Company. Society was enveloped with the ill fated customs. There was lack of proper education. If someone dared to raise his or her voice against the religion and the ill fated customs, then he or she was tortured in one way or the other. That was why no one dared to raise voice against them.
Vinod Roy was Ramakant’s father. After Vinod Roy’s death his whole property was distributed among Ramakant and his seven brother. In 1792, Ramakant got a new house built in Langoor Para. He and his family started living there. Now his son had grown up. He used to call his son as Rammohan. Jagmohan was Rammohan’s elder brother. Both were the sons of Tarini Devi, Whereas Ramlochan was the son of Ramni Devi. These three had only one sister.
Rammohan was a talented boy since childhood. He got well versed in Bengali and French languages at the tender age of nine only. Thereafter he gained knowledge of the Hindi and Arabian languages. In this way, by gaining knowledge he was approaching towards adulthood. When he noticed the worsening situation of India and its people, he was very upset. He wanted to remove all the evils prevailing in the society from the grassroot level. So he decided to educate the society.
That was possible only when India would be free from the clutches of the British rule. In those days, due to illiteracy, males were unaware of their strengths and females were bond to live inside the walls of their houses. They hid their faces in the veils. They were not allowed to speak before the elders and older people. They were the slaves of their husbands. If unfortunately their husbands died then they were also forced to get burned alongwith the dead bodies of their husbands. They would quietly suffer the tortures done on them by the society.
