Queen Laxmi Bai was the queen of Jhansi, who displayed great valour by raging a war against British rule with an objective to gain freedom from them.
Laxmi Bai was born on 17 November 1835 in Kashi. Her father’s name was Moropant and mother was called Bhagirathi Bai. Laxmi Bai was called ‘Manu’ in her childhood.
Moropant was working in the court of king Bajirao. Manu was called for to play and learn with Bajirao’s son ‘Nana’. Manu learned defensive skills of warfare and horse riding with him. Manu was extremely brave and fearless from her very childhood.
She got married to the king of Jhansi at a very early age. Her name was changed from ‘Manu’ to ‘Laxmi Bai’. Laxmi Bai grew up into a beautiful damsel and won the hearts of each and everyone with here qualities of love, compassion and intelligence.
Laxmi Bai gave birth to a boy but he died within four months. Later on her husband Gangadhar Rao got seriously sick and adopted a boy, before bidding ‘Good bye’ forever from the world. Gangadhar Rao died and queen Laxmi Bai became a widow in her youth.
Now she wanted to appoint her adopted son ‘Damodar Rao’ the king, but she got a terrible blow when the British Resident refuses to accept Damodar Rao as the king. They sent a letter to queen Laxmi Bai that now that the king was died, thus the British want to acquire the territory of Jhansi, Laxmibai would be given an annual pension for her livelihood.
Queen Laxmibai was greatly annoyed at the selfish attitude of British. She roared like a tigress, ‘‘No, I won’t give my Jhansi to you. I shall fight for Jhansi till my last breath.’’ Queen Laxmibai got prepared to defend her people from the British. The British sent their supreme commander to eliminate the queen of Jhansi and acquire the territory from her.
The British army surrounded the fort from all the four sides. Queen Laxmibai fought bravely but since the British were in large numbers, thus she planned to skip out of Jhansi with few of her brave soldiers.
Queen Laxmibai fled alongwith her adopted son. Her soldiers, who were left inside the fort fought bravely till their last breath.
Queen Laxmibai reached Ghaner. The British somehow sensed the whereabouts of queen Laxmibai and proceeded towards Ghaner to nab her. The brave soldiers didn’t allow the British to catch her and therefore queen Laxmibai reached the fort of Kalpi safely.
Many more freedom fighters and kings came to Kalpi, when they got the information of queen Laxmibai’s presence there. The queen attacked Gwalior alongwith her companions and acquired the territory of Gwalior from Jiyajirao. The British commander got the information of queen Laxmibai’s presence in Gwalior, thus he came and surrounded Gwalior from all the four sides.
