The assembly met and in one voice the proposal of King Dasharatha was agreed to. Happy at the outcome, the King sent Sumantra to call Rama to the assembly hall. He informed him of the decision that had been taken. One of Rama’s great qualities was his absolute obedience to his father’s will. He humbly accepted his father’s order to take the responsibility of being the Crown Prince. The King explained the duties that Rama would have to carry out. Sage Vasishtha advised Rama and Seeta to fast that evening in preparation for the coronation the next day. They dutifully fasted and meditated the whole night as they waited for the next morning. Meanwhile, the news of Rama being chosen as King Dasharatha’s successor spread across the kingdom. People began to celebrate. It would be wonderful to have their beloved prince as King later.
Preparing the Crown Prince
