Origin
The origin of this proverb is still unknown.
Explanation
Whatever is old is actually valued as gold. It also says that we should not consider any old thing as a waste, as every old thing is gold. People say old is gold because age brings with it maturity and experience. These things can’t be bought in the market. They can only be acquired. Since they are rare, they are considered precious and equated with gold.
“Old is gold” is a proverb that reminds us that old things are valuable, or that old items may be very valuable. “Old is gold” also suggests that older people are likely to be more reliable than younger people. You can depend on old people; they are slow to anger and quick to reason. Some old, but still good examples: old friends; old ideas that have been used before; old ways of doing things; the “good old days”; experienced people; knowledge; education; established and settled citizens; someone who has been through a particular crisis before.
Example
Her mother gifted her the watch of her grandmother. After all, old is gold.
