The first modern portable headset or mobile was developed and invented by Martin Cooper, who was the former general manager with Motorola for the systems division. He is said to have developed the concept and had made the first call to a portable cell phone in the month of April, 1973. He made the call to his arch rival Joel Engel, who was the head of research with Bell Laboratories, the company that had introduced the idea of cellular style communication. The handheld phone on which Dr. Cooper received the call weighed 2.5 pounds and was known to be 9 inches long. AT&T is known to have patented the concept of the portable phone system in the year 1947. The first company to integrate cellular technology into a portal device was Motorola. John F. Mitchell, who was the then Motorola’s chief of portable communication had a great contribution towards developing the concept.
