One evening, two friends were walking down a beach at sunset. As they walked, they noticed that an old man was picking up starfish washed up on the beach and throwing them back into the water. They were quite surprised. They approached the man and asked, “Good evening, Uncle. What are you doing?” “I am throwing these starfish back into the ocean. You see; it is a low tide right now and all these starfish have been washed up on the shore. If I do not throw them back into the sea, they will die here from lack of oxygen.” “I understand,” one of the friends said, “but there must be thousands of starfish on this beach. What difference could you make?” The old man smiled, bent down and picked yet another starfish up. As he threw it back into the sea, he replied, “I made a difference to this one at least!”
