Dame Lightly carried a large basket of apples for old Mrs Jipps, who stayed in the next village. She had to pass through the enchanted forest to reach there. She tripped over a root and the basket fell, with the apples rolling away in all directions! “Hey, Jinky! Come and help me collect these!” said a small, shrill voice. “We’ll take it for the princess!” Dame Lightly stood up to dust her clothes and found herself looking at two little elves who were busily putting the apples into her basket and getting ready to drag it off. “Look here! Those are mine!” said Dame Lightly. “There are lots of apples,” said the one called Jinky, “Why can’t you give us some for our Princess Fern?” “Fine!” she replied, “You take half!” The elves went off with their apples in a wheelbarrow. That’s how Princess Fern got lots of apples and so did Mrs Jipps!
