Library of Celsus

The Library of Celsus is an ancient Roman structure built in Anatolia, present-day Turkey, between 117 AD and 120 AD. Built in honour of Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus, a Roman Senator, the Library stored over 12,000 scrolls. Built on a 9-step platform, the library had three entrances leading into a single hall that faced east. Unfortunately, the interiors and façade of the library were destroyed in two separate earthquakes, and were only re-erected in the 1970s.

Amazing Fact: The Library is also a mausoleum for Celsus, who was buried beneath it in a marble sarcophagus.
