Subject : Tough Question Paper

Sir,
I shall feel very grateful to you if your give a place to my protest against the tough question paper in your esteemed paper in ‘Letters to Editor’ column.
The English Paper ‘B’ and Mathematics ‘A’ set for the Secondary School Examination of the board held respectively on 8th March and 16th this year were unfair to the students. The questions were very tough and out of course. There were a lot of terms mentioned in mathematics the examinees had never read or heard about. The Precis, Paragraphs and Compositions given in the English Paper were not from the text books. Reading the Questions Papers was a horrifying experience for the examinees. Generally the topics were beyond the general knowledge and standard of the class X students.
The authorities must keep in mind that the examinations are meant to fairly test the intelligence of the students. They are not for tormenting the examinees. One very precious year of the student’s life is involved. Hence, I hope the concerned authorities would instruct the examiners to mark the answer sheets generously in view of the above facts.
Yours faithfully

Subject : Nightlong blaring loudspeakers

Sir,
Through your esteemed paper I would like to bring to the notice of the concerned authorities the menace of night long loudspeaker noise.
I live in S.B.I. Flats in Hauz Khas. Some people in our nearby neighbourhood organise night long religious functions where loudspeakers blare at ear piercing pitch the bhajans which sound more like native acid rock music. It goes on without any break all night and every night. The residents of our flats can not go to sleep. We can’t prepare properly for the forthcoming Departmental Exams for promotions. Many sick people who need complete rest and quiet don’t get any and this noise menace is destroying our lives. Why do we Indians lack any civic sense? Why are we so insensitive? And Supreme Court has passed orders against the use of loud speakers after 10 pm. So, why are the concerned authorities not taking any steps to check the violation of the Supreme Court orders? Is any of the authorities listening?

Yours faithfully

Subject : Wrong Electricity Billing
Sir,
A week back we received our electricity bill for January-February No. AB-NDPL-45087 Dated, March 2, 20….. for Rs. 16282 only which was really a big shocker. In no way could we utilize so much electricity in mere two months of winter. In our small flat we have only three bulbs. The kitchen and bathroom bulbs are switched on only when required. We only have a small T.V. set and we don’t possess any electric/electronic gadget except a cooler which had no use during cold months. Besides this, there also is the fact that during January our entire family had gone to our native village for two weeks. We pointed out these facts to the NDPL authorities but they refused to entertain our complaint.
Infact the Discom officials have threatened to cut off our electric connection if we failed to pay the bill within 15 days. You can realise our predicament. Either it is a computer goof-up or grossly faulty meter. There is no justice for helpless citizens like me. Through this column of your esteemed newspaper I appeal to the concerned authorities to pay immediate attention to my case and rescue me from Franz Kafka like situation.
Yours faithfully

Subject : Construction of a mall on park

Sir,
Kindly allow me to register my protest at an illegal construction of a proposed mall just in front of our apartment house on land earmarked for a park. For years the children have been using it as a play ground. We were told that the open space was meant to be developed as a park for the benefit of the residents. During the last MCD elections the local winning candidate had specifically assured us that the development of the proposed park would be his priority agenda. Suddenly, a few weeks back some activity was noticed on the open ground. The children were asked not to encroach upon the ground. At first the residents thought that at last the work of the development of the park had begun. But how mistaken we were! Then, truck began to unload bricks and foundation digging started. A huge board went up telling us that a new fangled Mall was about to grace our neighbourhood. The shocked residents wondered about the fate of the park. The authorities gave stock reply ‘We don’t know’ to the inquiries of the residents. When we contacted our local councillor and asked about it he looked baffled. Obviously he had no idea. He promised to look into the mysterious affair. But that was the last we heard from him. He has gone underground.
Is it yet another example of the nexus between corrupt builders and MCD authorities-cum-engineers? Will the concerned people and chosen representatives of our area tell us what is going on?

Yours faithfully

Sir,
The recent report on the female foeticides and related figures are shocking for all conscientious citizens. No doubt the medical professionals involved in the heinous crime should be dealt out an exemplary punishment.
But the larger issue is the outdated mindset of the people who even in 21st century consider female child a curse, fit to be disposed off as dead foetus. This mindset is sustained by the social evils like dowry. To orthodox parents the girl child appears a burden that will take a heavy toll of the finances of the family. These social evils are so deep rooted that even education is failing to eradicate them. The male chauvinism refuses to accept the fact that the females are as good as they are. All the factors are compounding the situation. The ages old prejudices remain and even grow stranger. Then, there is the fact that the biggest enemy of a woman is another woman in the guise of mistress, mother-in-law or sister-in-law. The joint family system does not allow any room for corrections of imbalances. Thus, the problem can not be solved by punishing the medics guilty of foeticide. The real criminal is the society that clings to evil practices, outdated customs and irrational prejudices.
The need of the hour is massive effort to arouse public consciousness and to usher in new waves of social reforms.
Yours faithfully

Sir,
Through your esteemed newspaper I want to draw the attention of the concerned authorities and the representatives of the people of our area to the appalling civic conditions around here. The roads are full of pot holes. Riding a vehicle on these roads is nothing short of torture. There is a joke going around here that sit in a moving three wheeler with a pitcher of curd over this road and five minutes later you will be skimming chunks of butter from the churned up curd. It is just impossible to carry a sick person to a hospital or clinic.
The choked sewers make the matters worse. The drains keep overflowing flooding the roads. That makes the roads more dangerous. Many children has fallen in water filled ditches, pot holes and manholes. Complaints to the authorities have fallen on deaf ears. Even a T.V. report on our plight merely evoked assurances but no action has been taken. Let us see what reaction this letter in your reputed newspaper draws out?

Your faithfully

Subject : Dead Tel. No. 27611116

Sir,
My above telephone has been out of order for the last three weeks. I lodged a complaint about the same with the local exchange three weeks ago, the very day I detected the fault. The telephone authorities have not yet taken any step to revive my connection. I demand that the authorities take immediate steps to activate my telephone without any further delay.

8. Write a letter to a newspaper for its ‘Helpline’ column in respect of non-receipt of the subscribed journal.

Subject : Non receipt of journal
Sir,
I remitted a full year subscription of the journal ‘Body Builder’ (fortnightly) for Rs. 1100 only in the month of January instant to its New Cross Road, Mumbai-400007. office. I duly received the receipt of the payment and was given subscription no. 400298/07 in the same month. But I received no copy of the journal. By now I should have received 11 copies of the journal but I received none inspite of the several reminders to the circulation manager.
It is very strange that a sports journal treats its subscribers in such a shabby and irresponsible way. The journal is not a hoax. Its issues can seen on the pavements for sale regularly on due dates without fail. I wonder if the journal has some special treatment reserved for annual subscribers inspite of the fact that they pay full annul payment in advance.
I am sending you photocopy of their letter acknowledging the receipt of payment and allotment of the subscription number. Will the Circulation Manager look into the matter and ensure that my copies, all the due issues of the journal are despatched immediately and in future the issues are sent regularly?

Yours faithfully
Abdul Rehman Qureshi
Please note : In helpline letters the newspapers generally have their standard letter size to have the column look balanced. To whichever newspaper you wish to write, study the general letter size. Confine your letter to the approximate number of words contained by that size.
9. Write a letter to the Editor expressing your disapproval of the unruly behaviour of Delhi Metro passengers.

Subject : Delhi Metro and boorish passengers

Sir,
Delhi Metro is no doubt a world class transport asset, all gleaming, spic and span. But unfortunately Delhi passengers are not part of it. In discipline and civilised behaviour we are ages behind other cities with metro services. Infact at rush hours the passengers behave like cattle. There is no trace of orderly behaviour. The ones on the platform push and jostle rudely to get in when the train arrives. The ones who have to alight push to get spilled out of the coach. It is like a tug of war or like herds of wilder beasts crossing a Serangati river from both sides. It is really a shame for the Delhites who need to give up their boorish ways. A city does not become great only with its monuments, buildings or civic service systems. Infact the conduct and civilised behaviour of the citizens of a city leave the real lasting impression on others. Delhites have yet to learn a lot.

Yours faithfully
