Demon Ravana had a sister named Surpnakha. She was very ugly and wicked. Once she went to Panchvati where Rama was staying with Laxman and Sita. She was attracted by the beauty and charm of the two princes. She took the form of a beautiful woman. She went to Rama and asked him to marry her. But Rama told that he was already married. He jokingly asked her to go to Laxman. She approached Laxman and expressed her desire to marry him. But he too refused her proposal saying that he was merely a servant of Lord Rama and so he would not be able to give her any pleasures of life. She went to Rama again but he sent her back to Laxman. This time Laxman was irritated by her, so he insulted her and asked her to go away. She became very angry at this and came back to her real horrible form. Sita was frightened to see her. Seeing Sita, Rama secretly gave some instructions to Laxman. Laxman at once took a sword and punished Surpnakha by cutting off her nose and ears. Surpnakha was in great pain, and ran away from there.
