Russell loved circuses. Every time a circus was in town, Russell visited it with his parents. He loved the gymnastics, the animal tricks, the hula hoop artists but what he adored most was seeing the magic tricks. However, Russell did not like the clowns. He thought, ‘They are so silly! I don’t understand why people even like them!’ One day, Russell hurt his knee when he was playing football. He rested at home for a week. After a week, there was a new circus in town. So, Russell’s mother took him there to cheer him up. He was feeling sad when the clowns came up. Russell had seen all their tricks before, but today something about the clowns’ happiness seemed to cheer him up. He laughed heartily at their funny antics. Russell thought, ‘All our sorrows would go away if could just laugh like the clowns!’ From then on, his favourite part of any circus was the clowns’ show.
