Lal Bahadur Shastri was very ordinary in looks and height, yet he attained worldwide popularity due to his inner qualities.
This great leader of India was born on 2nd October 1904 in Mughalsarai town situated in Uttar Pradesh. His father was a school teacher. Unfortunately his father expired when he was only one and a half year old.
Lal Bahadur completed his studies in Benaras and Allahabad with great hardships.
At the age of 23, he was married to a graceful woman, Lalita Devi.
He was a freedom fighter and thus was imprisoned many times before India achieved independence.
In the year 1946, he was appointed as Parliamentary Secretary to the Chief Minister of U.P. Later on he was made the minister of Police and Transport.
In 1952, he became the union minister for Transport and Railways. He was appointed the union minister for Commerce and Industry in March 1958.
In 1961, he became the Home Minister after the death of Govind Ballabh Pant. After the demise of Pandit Nehru in the year 1964, he was appointed as the Prime Minister of India.
Lal Bahadur Shastri was a staunch supporter of Gandhiji non-violence principles. He dreamt of a world, where everyone dwelt in happiness and peace. Once he said, “We have now to fight for peace with the same courage and determination as we fought against aggression.”
He remained the Prime Minister of India only for 18 months, but within this brief period he won the hearts of every Indian with his inner qualities.
He gave the immortal slogan ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’ during the 1965 war against Pakistan. He was the man of great determination.
Lal Bahadur Shastri died at Tashkent on 11th January, 1966. He went there to sign on cease-fire accord with Pakistan. India salutes this great man, who sacrificed his entire life for the welfare of the nation.
