It was known as Kendal’s Hill, though no one knew why it was so. Long ago, Princess Gisela lived in a palace there and waited for her prince, Kendal, to return from the war. Years went by, but the prince did not return. Then the people learnt that the princess had died of a broken heart. One night, there was a dreadful storm. The rain came down in sheets and the next morning people found that the palace had vanished and a hill stood in its place! Every morning on a tree on the hill, a golden bird came and called ‘Kendal! Kendal!’ People believed it was the princess calling her prince. One morning while the golden bird called, another golden bird flew onto the tree! They sat for a long time, singing together. The music was so sweet that people came to listen to it! Then the birds flew away, never to return.
